Restoring Gamat Bay: Building a Healthier Future for Bali’s Coral Reefs

Every coral we plant today is an investment in the reefs of tomorrow.

Nestled within the spectacular Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area, Gamat Bay is home to vibrant coral reefs that support an incredible diversity of marine life. These reefs provide food and shelter for thousands of species, protect our coastlines from erosion, and support the local communities that rely on healthy oceans for tourism and fishing.

Like coral reefs around the world, however, Gamat Bay faces increasing challenges from climate change, storms, pollution, and other human impacts.

That’s why at Ceningan Divers, we’re committed to taking action through long-term coral restoration, scientific monitoring, and community participation—helping nature recover while inspiring others to become ocean stewards.

Restoring Our Reefs—One Coral at a Time

For the past two years, our conservation team has been restoring coral reefs in Gamat Bay through weekly coral restoration dives.

Every week, our team works alongside certified divers, volunteers, and conservation-minded guests to expand our growing coral restoration site.

During our most recent restoration dive, we installed a new steel spider restoration frame and transplanted approximately 60 healthy branching coral fragments onto the structure.

Each new frame creates additional habitat where corals can grow, marine life can return, and the reef can gradually rebuild itself over the coming years.

Giving Coral the Best Chance to Thrive

Every coral fragment we transplant is carefully selected to ensure the restoration process has as little impact on the natural reef as possible.

Wherever possible, we use coral fragments that have naturally broken away during storms or strong currents. When fragments are collected from healthy donor colonies, it is done using sustainable methods that allow the parent colony to continue growing.

Once collected, the corals are carefully transported and attached to the restoration frame as quickly as possible to minimize stress.

Each fragment is individually secured using cable ties, with enough space between neighboring corals to allow them to grow naturally without competing for light or water flow.

By carefully planning the placement of every coral, we give each colony the greatest opportunity to flourish.

Why Spider Frames?

Our restoration sites use specially designed steel spider frames, which have become one of the most effective coral restoration methods throughout Indonesia.

The frames provide a stable foundation above the seabed where coral fragments receive:

• Good water circulation
• Excellent sunlight exposure
• Reduced sediment build-up
• Space to grow into healthy coral colonies

Over time, these individual fragments fuse with the reef, creating new habitat for fish, turtles, reef invertebrates, and countless other marine species.

Restoration Backed by Science

Planting coral is only one part of successful reef restoration.

Understanding how those corals grow is equally important.

Before each coral fragment is attached to the restoration frame, our conservation team carefully measures and records its size.

These measurements create a baseline dataset that allows us to scientifically monitor each coral over time.

During future monitoring dives, every coral is re-measured and assessed to track:

• Growth rates
• Survival
• New branching development
• Coral health
• Signs of bleaching
• Algae growth
• Sediment accumulation
• Predation or damage

This long-term monitoring helps us understand which restoration techniques work best and allows us to continually improve our conservation program.

Every survey adds valuable information that contributes to better coral restoration—not only at Gamat Bay but across the wider Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area.
