Meet Ornella Weideli – A Passionate Marine Biologist Joining Ceningan Divers

Who is Ornella Weideli?

Ornella Weideli was raised in land-locked Switzerland a country known more for its mountains than its seas. Yet from childhood, she carried a deep fascination for the ocean and its unseen wonders.

Her educational path reflects this passion:

Ornella earned a Bachelor’s in Animal Biology, then went on to complete a Master’s and a Ph.D. in marine biology Over more than a decade, she has dedicated herself to studying sharks, reef ecology, and coastal marine ecosystems in various corners of the world from the Bahamas and Seychelles to French Polynesia, the United States, and beyond.

As a scientist, she specializes in the ecology and trophic dynamics of juvenile reef sharks, investigating how they share nursery habitats, survive, and adapt amid environmental pressures.

But Ornella’s calling goes beyond academic research. She is a dedicated science communicator: giving talks, writing articles, participating in radio/TV interviews, leading diving expeditions, and making scientific knowledge accessible to broad audiences.

On her website she writes:
“We are born with a natural interest about the living world… as we grow older, many of us lose this fascination. My mission is to get our interest back so we can take responsibility and take action.”

This blend of rigorous science, global field experience, and heartfelt outreach makes Ornella rare and valuable voice in marine conservation.

Why She’s Joining Ceningan Divers and What She Brings

We are beyond proud to announce that Ornella will be joining Ceningan Divers conservation team on Nusa Ceningan for the upcoming weeks.

What She Will Do Here

Coral & Reef Conservation Focus Though her background centers largely on shark ecology, Ornella is eager to shift focus toward coral reef health, monitoring, and restoration. This aligns perfectly with our ongoing conservation efforts around Nusa Ceningan.
Hands-on Conservation Work From reef checks and coral health assessments to debris cleanup, data collection, and reef-monitoring dives Ornella will be part of the core team implementing conservation practices under the water and on land.
Education & Outreach Leveraging her storytelling and communication skills, she’ll conduct dive-center workshops, presentations, and share findings with guests and divers. Her aim: help build a community that understands and cares for reef ecosystems.
Science-Based Conservation Her experience ensures all activities are grounded in real science giving credibility and purpose to what we do.

Why This Collaboration Matters

Having someone of Ornella’s caliber with global research experience, academic credentials, and passion for marine conservation enhances our mission significantly. She embodies what we believe in: that diving should be more than recreation it should be stewardship.
For our guests and divers, this collaboration means more than a dive vacation. It becomes an opportunity to learn, contribute, and truly connect with the ocean guided by a real scientist who understands both its fragility and its wonder.

Ornella’s Story From the Alps to the Ocean Depths

Ornella’s journey wasn’t obvious or expected. Growing up amidst Swiss peaks, the ocean was a distant dream. But that dream didn’t fade it grew stronger. At age 19, her first real encounter with sharks transformed her life. A two-month internship at a renowned marine research station opened her eyes to the complexity, beauty, and fragility of marine ecosystems. Instead of continuing a medical/biology path back home, she chose to dedicate her life to the sea.

Years of research, field work, scientific publications all built up to a deep reservoir of knowledge. Still, she realized that science alone wasn’t enough. The ocean’s future needed voices that could bridge science and public awareness. So she embraced science communication: turning data into stories, research into outreach, and fieldwork into education.

Now, with her joining us at Ceningan Divers, she brings not only expertise but heart, integrity, and a genuine desire to make a difference where it counts: the reef, the community, and the future.

Welcome, Ornella Let’s Dive, Learn & Protect Together

We’re thrilled to start this journey with Ornella on board. For the coming weeks, our reef, our reefers, and our community will be stronger because of her presence.
If you’re visiting or diving with us get ready for in-depth knowledge sessions, meaningful reef dives, and a chance to actively contribute to conservation, guided by a true marine scientist. Because at Ceningan Divers, we don’t just dive we protect.

Welcome to the team, Ornella.
