Dive in the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area

At Ceningan Divers, we are a passionate team of marine biologists, professional divers, coral farmers, conservationists, and students committed to inspiring action for coral reef protection. Our mission is to educate people from all walks of life about the vital role coral reefs play in our oceans. We believe that to truly protect these incredible ecosystems, understanding is the first step.

Conservation, Research & Education

We conduct curiosity driven, and conservation-oriented research with international and local students, and universities. We offer internships, volunteering opportunities and courses for research and conservation.

How our Program Works

Our volunteer program is centered around our restoration sites in Nusa Penida, starting with a training course, then a build your own itinerary for volunteer days.

To ensure you have the proper training, we ask that you have taken or complete one of our prerequisite courses. These courses will teach you how to correctly identify common corals, take proper precautions to avoid damaging them or getting stung, recognize coral-eating predators for their removal —all crucial skills for maintaining healthy coral nurseries and reefs.

Prerequisite

Intro to Coral Restoration: This course will enable you to assist as a citizen marine biologist with daily tasks like maintaining coral nurseries and restoration sites.

  • At least 14 years old
  • PADI/SSI Advanced Open Water Diver*
  • Have completed the prerequisite courses*
  • Demonstrate good buoyancy control to safely perform coral restoration tasks.

Packages

Volunteering with Ceningan Divers will change your life. It gives you the opportunity to learn new skills, immerse yourself in unfamiliar cultures and develop as a person.

We (and our oceans) constantly look for great people, willing to donate their time to our projects.

Packages range from 1 week to 3 months, contact us to design a package that inspires you.

Your Volunteer time

Typically, you will participate in a range of Restoration and Education programs alongside our dedicated staff.

  • Coral Restoration 
  • Turtle identification
  • Manta identification
  • Mangrove restoration
  • Citizen science programs and more.

Costs

This is a “paid for” placement which enables the projects to be self-funded. Having this financial independence allows us the freedom to run projects that are important and will have a meaningful impact on the health of the reef.

Your placement fee pays for your scuba rental equipment, boats and guide fees and the remainder goes towards reef research.

By joining Ceningan Divers as a volunteer, you are directly contributing to the monitoring and management of the reefs; as well as gaining invaluable skills, connections and an utterly unique experience.

Requirements

During your time, we will train you in reef ecology and survey techniques. A vital part of the placement is heading to the reef to collect data, with the bonus of always having one of our highly qualified marine scientists by your side.

During this placement you will collect real data on actual projects that link directly back into management of the reef, and citizen science initiatives.
