Dr Ornella Weideli

​Growing up in Switzerland – a landlocked, mountainous country – did not stop me from dreaming about the ocean. On the contrary, I was fascinated by and passionate about the underwater world from an early age. 

My scientific interest in sharks was what initially drew me away from home. ​​I pursued a Master’s degree and a PhD, which gave me the opportunity to live and work for several years in the Bahamas, Seychelles, French Polynesia, the United States, and France. During the pandemic, I decided to return to Switzerland to focus on sharing my knowledge and experiences through outreach activities, such as presentations, articles, radio and TV appearances, as well as accompanying diving expeditions.​

My love for scientific research, however, has not faded over the years. By being part of international collaborations, I continue to advance scientific knowledge about sharks.
