Be the change beneath the waves – Volunteer Today

Support Marine Conservation – Volunteer Today

Are you looking for a meaningful way to contribute to marine conservation while exploring the stunning Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area? Imagine diving into crystal-clear waters, surrounded by vibrant corals, manta rays, turtles, and countless reef species—while knowing that every moment you spend here helps protect and restore these ecosystems for future generations.

At Ceningan Divers, we believe there is no better way to experience the reef than alongside experts who dedicate their lives to its protection. Our marine biologists and Master Reef Guides are highly qualified postgraduates with thousands of hours spent underwater, studying and protecting these ecosystems. They bring a wealth of knowledge and passion that will transform the way you see the ocean.

We are more than just a dive center—we are a PADI Eco Center, recognized as a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Dive Center, and proud to be awarded as a Green Fins Best Environmental Performer. Our team is made up of marine biologists, coral farmers, professional divers, conservationists, and students united by one mission: to inspire action and educate people about the vital role coral reefs play in sustaining life on Earth.

Conservation, Research & Education

Our work focuses on research-driven conservation and hands-on education. We collaborate with universities, schools, and international students to conduct impactful studies and projects that address pressing marine challenges. Through internships, volunteer placements, and training programs, we offer opportunities for people from all walks of life to take part in protecting and restoring coral reefs.

The Ceningan Divers Volunteer Program was designed to maximize the amount of research, education, and conservation taking place in the Nusa Penida MPA. As a volunteer or intern, you won’t just observe—you’ll actively participate in real scientific projects that directly inform the management and protection of the reef. From coral restoration to species monitoring, your efforts will feed into scientific databases that guide conservation policies across Indonesia and beyond.

What You’ll Be Doing

Your placement will immerse you in a wide variety of conservation and education projects. Some of the exciting opportunities include:

  • Coral Restoration – Assist in maintaining coral nurseries and restoration sites, helping damaged reefs recover and thrive.
  • Turtle Identification – Document Sea turtle sightings, contributing to long-term population monitoring.
  • Manta Ray Research – Photograph and identify individual mantas to track their movements and behavior.
  • Mangrove Restoration – Participate in replanting efforts that protect coastlines and create essential nurseries for marine life.
  • Citizen Science Projects – Engage in community-based monitoring programs that connect science with everyday ocean lovers.
  • Reef Health Surveys – Collect data on coral cover, indicator species, and overall reef health.
  • Community Engagement – Work with local schools and villages to raise awareness about marine conservation.
  • Education Program Support – Help design workshops, create learning materials, and inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.
  • Data Collection & Analysis – Enter, analyze, and share data that supports both local and global research initiatives.

Unlike many volunteer programs, your work here directly contributes to ongoing scientific projects that are essential to the long-term health of the Nusa Penida MPA.

What to Expect

A typical day begins with a morning briefing from your marine scientist guide, where you’ll learn about the day’s goals, safety, and specific survey techniques. From there, you’ll board our boats and head to the reef for two dives or snorkel sessions. Each underwater session is an opportunity not only to explore but also to contribute—identifying species, recording behaviors, and gathering valuable data.

After dives, you’ll return to base for debriefing sessions where findings are discussed and entered into relevant databases. Some afternoons are spent in workshops, data analysis, community projects, or skill-building sessions. And if you have a special interest—whether it’s video editing, IT, education, or outreach—we’ll work with you to incorporate those passions into your placement.

Your volunteer package includes:

  • Two dives or snorkels per day guided by marine biologists
  • All scuba or snorkel equipment
  • Transport to and from reef sites
  • Full scientific briefing and debriefing each day
  • Training in coral restoration and marine research methods
  • Access to our marine conservation resources and facilities

Every activity is designed to give you a balance of exploration, education, and impact.
